Every year, San Marino celebrates Saint Aghata, patron of the city of Catania and joint-patron of the Republic. The feast dates back to 5 February 1740, when Cardinal Enriquez, envoy of the Holy See, gave back to the country that independence and freedom which Cardinal Alberoni had endeavoured to undermine in the previous months. Since then, the occasion is celebrated with a suggestive ceremony and a procession that winds its way from Borgo Maggiore as far as the Basilica of the Saint in the old-city centre of San Marino. The procession starts off at 2.30 pm. In the evening, the San Marino company “Il Piccolo Teatro Arnaldo Martelli” gives a performance in San Marino dialect in the Titano Theatre.
