When it comes to shopping San Marino caters for all tastes. The old-town, with hundreds of shops, offers a wide range of goods. At every corner the eye is caught by a new surprise and every wish comes true in this unique setting, the ideal place to spend an afternoon or a summer evening enjoying the colourful displays of objects. Walking amid the old streets it is easy to come across local and traditional products: hand-painted ceramic ware, beautiful objets d’art, wrought iron and wood articles or items made of precious materials, refined lace and embroidery. In 1995, the Republic of San Marino established a Mark of Origin to protect and promote its arts and crafts.
The Republic of San Marino's production of stamps and coins is known throughout the world, the only country within the Euro zone to issue the famous 'Scudo', the gold coin which is still legal tender. For collectors and for anyone who wishes to purchase or give a thoroughly original work as a gift, the Azienda Autonoma di Stato Filatelica e Numismatica (Autonomous State Philatelic and Numismatic Company), located in the old-town square called Piazza Garibaldi, is the place to go for information and news.
Outside the old-town centre, along the main highway, a great deal of shops are available: shopping arcades, shopping centres, outlets and shops specialised in electronic items.
Some shops also offer tax-free goods for foreigners.
