Christmas of Wonders 2020-2021 presentation

tradition and emotions

Safety and attention to detail for an edition that promises to be very special. Lights, atmosphere and installations will make the old town magical. Markets are confirmed.

San Marino, 19 November, 2020 – This afternoon the 2020 edition of Christmas of Wonders was presented, the traditional Christmas appointment in the Republic of San Marino wanted by the Ministry of Tourism. The health emergency does not stop the event but it is adapted to the necessary safety standards and leaving out some attractions initially planned. There will be markets, scenic settings and installations and the atmosphere will be guaranteed by projections and lights. The realization of the event is entrusted to Alberto Di Rosa’s Nextime Eventi, with Simone Ranieri’s artistic direction, with the help of partners / suppliers and companies especially from San Marino and the collaboration of the Republic of San Marino Tourism Board.

“It will obviously be a different Christmas than we had imagined, but I couldn't think of not following up on the tradition,” declares the Minister of Tourism Federico Pedini Amati. "It has been a very complicated year, a dark one. And we respond with light. I asked Next Time Eventi to create a fairytale Christmas strictly in line with tradition. We want atmosphere, we want emotions. It will be a Christmas for the people of San Marino, for our shopkeepers, for our families, for our children. And if things should change, for better or for worse, we are ready to change the project in progress. We will pay attention to the evolution of the emergency and prepare every possible safeguard".

"Consistent with the artistic project, the visual communication campaign recalls the classic iconographic elements of the holiday that’s most felt by families, especially this year," says the Tourism Board’s Director Nicoletta Corbelli. "The media plan will be dedicated for the first time exclusively to the San Marino territory, but our hope is to be able to implement it even outside national borders, should the situation improve".

The Christmas of Wonders 2020 opens next December 5 and closes on January 6 2021. The goal of the organizers is to give visitors the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the Christmas tradition, although revisited, thanks to experiential activities, lights, sets, projections and installations. The health emergency has obviously changed the initial plans and therefore there will be no rides, games, shows and performances that could have caused crowds or that could have represented risky situations.

Alberto Di Rosa - Next Time Events’ Project Manager: “Christmas of Wonders 2020 is not what was initially thought, it is a reduced version in which all the components that risked being in conflict with the regulations for the fight against Coronavirus are missing. There will be no games, shows and attractions and unfortunately some areas will not be covered, as we had decided to do instead. Despite this, I believe that Christmas 2020 will not make us miss past editions. There will be spectacular scenic effects that will make visitors experience strong emotions, especially in Piazza della Libertà. Markets are confirmed and we are also launching the SantaClausSpeaks, a one-of-a-kind attraction that will put our children in contact with Santa Claus who will answer via video conference from Lapland! I sincerely thank our sponsors, partners and companies who worked for this event, everything is much more complicated but we have a great goal: to make the families who decide to visit the old town live Christmas in serenity ".

Simone Ranieri - Next Time Events’ Artistic Director: “We have focused on the theme of Fairytales, the settings will all be oriented towards the Nutcracker and traditional Christmas tales. I don't want to give too much away but I think the sound, light and projection show in Piazza della Libertà is truly one of a kind! The decorations and the sets have the purpose to strike, recall a photograph, immerse visitors in a pure, traditional, fairytale atmosphere".

The Old Town of San Marino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus becomes "A Fairytale Place", an enchanted territory in which you can immerse yourself and fully experience the thrill of Christmas. Arrangements, signs, photosets, symbols and settings will refer to the world of fairytales with enchanted trees, Nutcracker soldiers, bows and decorations. The shops in the center will receive window stickers to apply to their windows in order to be part of the big event.

Three confirmed attractions: the Nutcracker Garden in Piazza della Libertà with a large carillon ready to open when the clock in Palazzo Pubblico strikes and a micro show to be discovered; the handmade nativity scene in Piazzale Domus Plebis; the SantaClausSpeaks of the Cassa di Risparmio Gallery where the little ones can post their letters and get in touch directly with Santa Claus, who this year will reply, in live streaming, from his home in Lapland in maximum safety and avoiding contact and gathering.

The traditional markets are back with 36 huts in three different locations: via Eugippo, via Donna Felicissima and Cava Antica (P6). To date, 17 San Marino exhibitors are confirmed and Nextime Eventi will give priority to those who represent the excellence of our territory.

In this particularly dark historical moment, lights will light up emotions; streets will be illuminated as well as the access doors to the old town, the battlements, the walls of Cava dei Balestrieri and, some gardens and green corners with elements that refer to the world of fairytales.

Projections and the architectural lights will color the rock of Cava dei Balestrieri, Via Donna Felicissima, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazzetta Titano, Piazzale Domus Plebis and of course houses and monuments that overlook Piazza della Libertà, including Palazzo Pubblico. Christmas Music will be playing in most of the places in the old town.

A protocol has been developed to fight the spreading of Covid-19 and the Ministry of Tourism, together with the Tourism Board and Nextime Eventi, reserves the right to take initiatives and implement further restrictive measures if necessary, in line with the trend of the emergency.

Enter the Christmas FairyTale in San Marino: 5, 6, 7 and 8 December, 12 and 13 December and every day from 19 December to 6 January 2021, from 10.00 to 19.30. On December 25th and January 1st from 15.00 to 19.30.
