The Torneo dei Castelli is one of the most representative events of the historical and cultural tradition of the Republic of San Marino, organized annually by the Federation of Sammarinese Crossbowmen. It takes place in one of the most evocative settings of the historic center: the Cava dei Balestrieri.

This year, in collaboration with the School Directorate, the initiative is enriched by the active involvement of younger generations, becoming an educational project aimed at fifth-grade primary school students of the Republic of San Marino for the 2025/2026 school year.

The tournament involves representatives from the nine Castelli (districts) of San Marino, who compete in a spectacular contest of traditional bench crossbow shooting, a historical discipline deeply rooted in Sammarinese tradition. Each participant, dressed in faithfully reconstructed medieval attire, represents their own Castello and competes in a test of precision and skill, aiming to hit the target with the greatest accuracy. The entire event follows a strict historical ceremony, evoking the ancient spirit of chivalric competitions. The children who won the art contest—based on creating a drawing depicting the coat of arms of their Castello and their school—will also take part in the parade.

Enhancing the event are historical parades, performances by drummers, musicians, flag-wavers, and costumed performers, creating an immersive and engaging atmosphere that transports the audience back to the medieval era. The Torneo dei Castelli is also an opportunity to promote local craftsmanship and culture.

Beyond its sporting and competitive aspects, the event carries strong symbolic meaning: it represents the union between past and present, the preservation of the Republic’s historical roots, and the sense of identity and pride of the Sammarinese people.
