The Cable Car
One of the most picturesque ways to reach the heart of the Old Town
The Cable Car is a truly convenient mode of transport used by both locals and tourists, linking the Municipality of Borgo Maggiore to the Old Town of the Municipality of Città di San Marino, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In less than two minutes, you ascend a height of around 200 metres whilst taking in amazing views.
During the ascent, the real spectacle is the view: on clear days, you can see the entire Romagna coastline all the way to the Adriatic Sea, as well as the surrounding hills. Once at the top, you find yourself in the Old Town and can easily reach the most iconic sites, such as the famous Towers, the Basilica of Saint Marinus and the Publica Palace.
The cable car ride can be an integral part of a visit to San Marino, almost a spectacular ‘welcome’ from the city to its visitors.

The history of the Cable Car
Construction work on the San Marino Cable Car began in 1956 and, after three years of hard work, the project was completed and inaugurated in 1959, immediately attracting great interest and curiosity.
The first ticket for the cable car journey, from Borgo Maggiore to Città di San Marino, was in fact issued on 1 August 1959 for a very special passenger: the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, which had arrived in Borgo Maggiore by helicopter.
Over the years, numerous technical and safety improvements have been carried out at the two stations and along the line. Following its closure on 5 March 1995 and more than a year of works, the cable car reopened on 25 May 1996 with a more modern and spacious structure, which reduced waiting times between journeys.
The new facility was inaugurated by the Captains Regent, who, after cutting the ribbon, took the inaugural ride from Borgo Maggiore to Città di San Marino. Hundreds of citizens took part in this day of celebration, which was even marked with a special postmark featuring a reproduction of the new cable car.
