Story and development

The Rimini-San Marino narrow gauge railway line, a major engineering project, was inaugurated in 1932. This rail link lasted about 12 years, until 1944, the train taking about an hour to cover the 32 km of track.

During World War II, the tunnels provided shelter to thousands of refugees seeking asylum in the small, neutral territory of San Marino.
The railway ceased to function when it was destroyed by air raids on 26 June, 1944.
In 2012, however, some parts of it were restored to preserve their great cultural and human value.

Today it is possible to visit the Montale Tunnel, which goes through Mount Titano, and see the AB-03 electric train, restored after as many as 68 years of inactivity.
