San Marino will be at Expo 2025

The State Congress authorized the participation of the Republic of San Marino in the Osaka 2025 Universal Exposition which will take place from 13 April to 13 October 2025 and established the General Commissariat by appointing Filippo Francini as Commissioner. Participation was confirmed with the signing of the agreement at the Japanese embassy on 27 December.

The Republic of San Marino is called, once again, to affirm its identity and its international vision to promote tourism, culture, traditions, business, development opportunities and territory through the most important event of universal value.
The Minister of Tourism in charge of the Expo Federico Pedini Amati and the General Commissioner Filippo Francini have spoken today at the Press Conference for the first previews of the project and to communicate the start of the operations that will lead to the San Marino "landing" in Osaka.

The conference opened with the memory of Mauro Maiani, commissioner in previous editions of Expo and a man who has always supported the importance of San Marino participation in the various universal exhibitions and who tragically lost his life precisely on the occasion of Expo Dubai 2023.

“The State Congress has chosen to participate - explained the Minister of Tourism Federico Pedini Amati - also in light of the prestigious results obtained in the edition held in the United Arab Emirates where the Republic of San Marino carved out a role for itself protagonist as the great states of the world and where, thanks to the work of Mauro Maiani first and Filippo Francini then, it has managed to forge fundamental agreements in the various sectors. The Expo remembered Pedini Amati - it's not just tourism, culture or business. Expo is a 360-degree national identity, it is a unique opportunity to introduce the country to the world, it is the best showcase for presenting traditions and cultures and it is an opportunity to involve our young people by networking them with those of all other countries" .

Expo 2025 Osaka was born with a particular focus on the path towards 2030 and the Objectives of the United Nations Agenda for Sustainability. Technology and sustainability will significantly characterize this edition, the second hosted by Osaka after the one in 1970.

DESIGNING FUTURE SOCIETY FOR OUR LIVES is the theme chosen by the Japanese organization, a theme that aims to recall the responsibility of each individual in achieving their life aspiration to create a shared vision of a sustainable society.

The subthemes are: Saving Lives on lifestyles, nutrition, well-being and health; Empowering Lives linked to education, AI and work; Connecting Lives on the themes of society and the sense of community. At the moment, a Pavilion in the “Saving Lives” cluster has been assigned to San Marino. The exhibition area where the Osaka Expo will be built will have a total area of 390 hectares of which 155 will be used for exhibitions and other activities. The site is located on the artificial island of Yumeshima, in the waterfront of the city of Osaka. The San Marino pavilion, of the "assisted" type, will be built in a cluster that will host 12 countries and which is located at the centre of the large Expo area. It will be set up in the second half of 2024 thanks to a University of San Marino's project, it will measure 52 m2 to which a small external shop will be added.

The National Day, for which the assignment of a date at the beginning of May 2025 is being defined, will represent the highest and most significant moment of San Marino participation and will see the presence at the institutional ceremonies of the highest authorities of Japan and the Republic of San Marino and groups able to transmit San Marino culture. There will the Federations of Crossbowmen of San Marino but there will be also various artistic performances from San Marino. Furthermore, three events for the economic promotion of the country system involving public bodies and private companies are already planned. The Agency for Economic Development - Chamber of Commerce will play an active and fundamental role which, as per the decree, will be in charge of administrative management.
